Arsenal and Chelsea hero Olivier Giroud picks his greatest goal - 'Never see that again'

He was a scorer of great goals and former Arsenal and Chelsea star Olivier Giroud has now had his say on which was the best in his career.

Giroud joined Arsenal for £13m in 2012 after turning down Middlesbrough and Celtic and would go on to score 105 goals for the Gunners before leaving for London rivals Chelsea. There he won the Champions League in 2021 while also going on to be France’s all-time record scorer - although his record of 57 looks set to be usurped by Kylian Mbappe before too long.

Now the 39-year-old has had his say on which goal is the best of them all - picking out his stunning ‘scorpion kick’ against Crystal Palace as his piece de resistance.

"My best goals aren’t too bad,” he told L’Equipe. “The best, that’s still the scorpion kick with Arsenal. With all modesty, we’’ll never see that move again.

"A showman? Not like the geniuses, the magicians, the dribblers like Neymar, the guys who get the crowd on their feet with their moves, but in another way, yes, I am.”

On the subject of Mbappe stealing his French crown - which he himself took from Arsenal icon Thierry Henry - the four-time FA Cup winner says: “He will be 27 (in December) so he still has five to six years, 10-12 matches a season, he can get to not far off 100, and I hope he does!”

Giroud, now back in Europe with Lille - returning to France for the first time in 13 years - is also open to extending his career beyond his 40th birthday by playing next season.

Giroud, who turned 39 last month, is open to emulating Cristiano Ronaldo - who recently signed a new contract with Saudi side Al Nassr and will lead Portugal to next summer’s World Cup at the age of 41.

He said: “It could be one year plus another, but it could just be one, too. You can’t have regrets. You have to live in the moment and be ready to stop it all at some point. But 40 is a number that I am aware of.

"But it will be a group decision, with my wife and my family. It is about being reasonable. If I think that I can bring something and if the club are also satisfied with me, we will sit around a table and we’ll see.”
