Guidelines for the electronics components manufacturing scheme are almost complete and the portal for applications will be launched in the next few days, union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday.
Components like printed circuit board (PCB), PCB assembly, electromechanical components, a large number of passive components and camera modules, among others, are expected to be made in India.
“I would prefer even (that) the entire camera is made in India,” Vaishnaw said at the inauguration of VVDN Technologies’ mechanical innovation park and surface mount technology (SMT) line at Manesar. “Components manufactured here will be even exported to Japan. That kind of precision is available.”
India should work on making a wide spectrum of components while developing substantial depth in some of them, the minister said.
India’s electronics ecosystem is maturing, with even AI servers being designed and manufactured in the country. India’s goal of locally enabling complete smartphone design, chips and components like PCB is now taking shape, he said.
“It's a very big thing from multiple perspectives—from a security perspective, from a value addition perspective, from a design capability perspective, and being able to upgrade on our own.”
India’s respect towards intellectual property and its growing design capabilities will set it apart from competing nations and power exponential growth in the next four to five years, he said.
On whether the electronics industry has any concerns amid uncertainties arising from US tariffs, the minister said, “The industry feels that they will be able to figure out alternatives, because the entire world has been preparing for diversifying the value chains ever since Covid struck”.
Almost all developed nations are today importing electronics from India, Vaishnaw added.
India aims to expand electronics exports to $500 billion by 2030-31.
