After much anticipation and speculation, Kannappa, the mythological epic headlined by Telugu actor Vishnu Manchu, is all set to make its OTT debut. The film, which hit theatres on June 27, 2025, will reportedly begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video soon. The film is adhering to the 10-week theatrical window that Vishnu Manchu had firmly promised during the film’s promotions.
Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is a passion project for Vishnu Manchu, who not only plays the titular role but also penned the screenplay. The film was produced under his home banner, with the backing and guidance of his father, veteran actor Mohan Babu, who also appears in a supporting role.
Kannappa OTT release update
Vishnu Manchu’s decision to delay the film’s digital release beyond the industry norm of 30 days was a deliberate move to honour the theatrical experience. Now, as per OTT play report, the film will be released on Amazon Prime Video on September 5. Kannappa is expected to find a broader audience on OTT. However, we are still waiting for the official confirmation.
The narrative of Kannappa follows the dramatic spiritual transformation of Thinnadu, a fierce and rebellious tribal hunter. Initially indifferent to religious beliefs, Thinnadu’s life takes a profound turn as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and devotion, ultimately becoming a staunch follower of Lord Shiva. The film attempts to bring this mythological tale to life with grandeur, emotion, and visual spectacle.
Kannappa features a star-studded ensemble, including Akshay Kumar portrays Lord Shiva, Prabhas takes on the role of Rudra, Mohanlal plays Kirata, and Kajal Aggarwal stars as Goddess Parvati. The cast also includes Preity Mukhundhan (Nemali), R. Sarathkumar (Nathanathudu), and Madhoo (Pannaga) in key roles.
More about Kannappa
The film’s cinematography is helmed by Sheldon Chau, who captures the spiritual and mythological landscape with a visually immersive style. The elaborate sets, stylised action sequences, and divine depictions are tailored to show how the film is rooted in ancient Indian lore.
Made on a massive budget of Rs 200 crore, Kannappa aimed for pan-Indian reach. Alongside the original Telugu version, the film was simultaneously released in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. However, despite the scale of production and the star power involved, the theatrical performance fell short of expectations. The film earned only Rs 32 crore at the box office in India. The film's runtime of 182 minutes makes it one of the more expansive mythological dramas released in recent times.
