The demise of Divya Bharti, who passed away at the tender age of 19 remains one of the tragic incidents in Bollywood. One of the most in-demand leading ladies of the 90s, she had a successful career in Hindi and Telugu film industries and formed successful pairings with Venkatesh, Govinda and Shah Rukh Khan. Incidentally, she was SRK’s first heroine (‘Deewana’). However, her illustrious career was cut short as she died in a bizarre accident.
In a candid chat with Pinkvilla, filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, who had produced the 1992 romantic action comedy ‘ Shola Aur Shabnam’ starring Bharti and Govinda, reminisced about the actress, praising her work ethic and describing her as a “very good girl.”
Recalling a funny incident during filming of ‘Shola Aur Shabnam,’ Nihalani recalled how she was injured when a nail pierced her foot. Concerned for her well-being, he cancelled shooting and gave her time off to recover. However, Divya was adamant and arrived at his house to convince him. She then barged into his room to wake him up.
“I was asleep since the morning shoot was cancelled, but still she came into my room, got the door opened by housekeeping, and sat on my chest saying, ‘Wake up.’ My wife asked, ‘Who is this girl? Both my wife and I were sleeping, and she came and sat on my chest.’”
A Love Story Cut Short
As per a Times Of India report, Bharti and producer Sajid Nadiawala fell in love while filming ‘Shola Aur Shabnam.’ Nadiawala had come to visit Govinda, but Divya caught his eye and sparks flew between the two.
On 10 May 1992, the two decided to tie the knot in a quiet and private wedding ceremony. Divya was only 18 years old when she took this significant step. Despite the milestone, she chose not to disclose the marriage immediately, especially to her father, Om Prakash Bharti. For months, the relationship remained hidden, until the Diwali festival later that year, when the young couple finally revealed the truth. Though her father initially struggled to accept the news, over time he gradually came to terms with it.
Tragically, their marital life lasted less than a year. On 5 April 1993, Divya Bharti passed away after a fatal fall from the balcony of her apartment. She was just 19 years old when her life was abruptly cut short. The news sent shockwaves through the film industry and left her countless admirers stunned and heartbroken. For Sajid Nadiadwala, the loss was shattering, as the sudden death of his young wife left him devastated.
