India's longest railway tunnel sets new milestone; all you need to know

Send Push
India has taken a monumental leap in railway infrastructure development with the successful completion of the country's longest railway tunnel in Uttarakhand. Stretching over 14.6 km, this engineering marvel—Tunnel T-8—forms a critical part of the ambitious Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Rail Project , a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity in the Himalayan state.

The tunnel connects Devprayag and Janasu in Uttarakhand’s rugged terrain, and it has been constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), aptly named ‘Shakti’. This is the first time such advanced boring technology has been deployed in a mountainous region in India. The TBM set a national record by excavating over 1,080 meters in a single month, showcasing India's growing expertise in tunneling and rail infrastructure.

The tunnel breakthrough marks a turning point in the construction of the 125-kilometer Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Broad Gauge Line, which is being developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). The project includes 17 tunnels and 35 bridges, with nearly 85% of the route running through tunnels, reflecting the challenging topography of the Himalayas.

What this means for UttarakhandThe significance of this project extends far beyond its engineering credentials. Once completed, the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag line will serve as a crucial link to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri. This will make travel easier and safer for lakhs of pilgrims who visit the region annually.

Moreover, the rail line is expected to drastically cut travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag to just around 2 hours, as opposed to the current journey by road, which can take 6–7 hours depending on weather and traffic conditions.

Both Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attended the tunnel's completion ceremony, highlighting the project's significance in changing the socioeconomic landscape of the area.

A boost for tourism and employmentImproved connectivity is expected to boost tourism, especially spiritual and eco-tourism, which are mainstays of Uttarakhand's economy. The new rail line will also help create local employment, both during construction and after the project becomes operational, due to increased movement of goods and people.

The project also has important disaster management ramifications. Rail link will provide a more stable and dependable option than roads, particularly in times of emergency, as Uttarakhand is vulnerable to landslides and flash floods.

Over 70% of the project has been finished as of early 2025, and by December 2026, the entire line should be operational. By the time it is finished, the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag line will serve as evidence of India's capacity to combine cutting-edge engineering with the difficulties of nature, allowing access to previously unreachable areas while maintaining the ecological balance.
