Navi Mumbai: Fishermen issued warning by Raigad administration as squally weather expected along Maharashtra-Goa coast until May 23. According to the administration, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day warning for fishermen and coastal communities in Maharashtra, Goa, and surrounding maritime regions due to expected squally weather and strong winds from May 19 to May 23.
Squally winds with speeds ranging between 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected along and off the North Konkan and Goa coasts on May 21 and May 23. "In view of this, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea up to 75 kilometers from the coast on these specific days," said a statement by Raigad administration.
Along the South Maharashtra-Goa coast, similar squally conditions are forecasted to persist throughout the entire period from May 19 to May 23. The IMD has issued a warning for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea during these five days.
In addition to the coastal warnings, hazardous conditions have also been forecasted for the high seas. The western parts of the West central Arabian Sea, particularly off the Oman coast, as well as the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Comorin area, are expected to witness winds of 45 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph during the entire five-day period.
The coastal regions of Kerala and Karnataka, including the adjoining Lakshadweep area, along with parts of South Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, are also expected to experience squally weather with wind speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.
Each day of the forecast period, from May 19 to May 23, includes a risk of rough sea conditions, especially in the southwest Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Mannar, the Comorin region, and the coastal belts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.
The IMD has strongly advised fishermen to stay ashore and avoid venturing into the sea across all the mentioned regions during the forecast period due to the high risk of dangerous wind and sea conditions.
"Maritime operators and local authorities are urged to remain vigilant, follow updates from the IMD closely, and take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure safety," the administration added.
