Arsenal's next major sale is an obvious one after tricky Mikel Arteta decision

Arsenal could attempt to offload Gabriel Jesus in January after Gunners boss Mikel Arteta opted to leave the Brazilian out of his Champions League squad ahead of the league phase of the competition. The 28-year-old is yet to return to action after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January.

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in July 2022 and has gone on to bag 26 goals and 20 assists in 96 appearances for the club. But he may struggle to win his place back in the Arsenal frontline when he does finally return to action, with his team signing attacking trio Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke this summer.

Arteta's decision to omit Jesus from the Champions League squad could indicate that the player is a long way off from returning to the pitch.

But the player has been tipped to be available again this autumn following a seven-and-a-half month absence.

And with Arsenal unable to register any new players for their European campaign until the knockout stages begin next February, the snub may be a sign that Jesus has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium. So the north London giants could instead opt to cash in on the ace at the start of next year.

By the time January rolls around, Jesus will have just 18 months remaining on his Arsenal contract.

So the Gunners may be confident of getting a decent fee for a player who has been capped 64 times by Brazil.

There will be plenty of clubs willing to take a chance on the star if he can prove his fitness, but his market value will rapidly drop as he nears the end of his current deal.

Jesus may also be tempted to move on as he could find himself stuck behind Gyokeres over the long term.

But for now the player will just be focused on returning to the pitch and helping his team as much as he can whenever he's called upon.

Arsenal enjoyed a decent start to the new Premier League season as they defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening weekend. And they backed that up with a 5-0 victory over Leeds as Gyokeres grabbed a brace.

But Arteta's side suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool. Dominik Szoboszlai netted the winning goal seven minutes before full-time as he fired in a sumptuous free-kick to move the Reds two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.
