If you're currently in the throes of battle to keep your kitchen smelling fresh, there might be a silent culprit causing a stink in your midst - the dishwasher. Its warm and damp settings offer the perfect environment for mould spores to thrive, helped by the food particles left behind from previous cycles.
And, let's be honest, do you really wash your plate clean before loading up the dishwasher? If not, that will be contributing to the smell. Luckily, there are several ways in which to address any bad odours coming from your dishwasher, though some may come at a cost. Also, the first thing you should do is clean the appliance, especially the drain filter and drain, with the former located at the bottom of the dishwasher's interior.
Make sure no debris or food is clinging to the filter, as this will build up over time, along with a horrid smell. The filter is removable in most machines.
Pouring a tablespoon of solution, made up of baking soda and vinegar, down the drain, before letting it sit and running a rinse cycle will also clear the pipes to help eradicate any unwanted smells.
But, according to US-based plumbing experts, Bailey Brothers, there is also a method you can follow in your kitchen to not only remove bad odours but replace them with a fresh scent to waft throughout your home.
And, all you need to do so are some spare lemons; you might already have some in stock or be able to pick them up at a nearby shop for a small price.
"Save some lemon peels and put them in a bowl on the top rack of the dishwasher," explain the brothers.
"[Once done] Run the dishwasher empty, except the lemon bowl, for a full cycle. Smell the lemony freshness!"
This simple and easy-to-follow tip will produce a refreshing, zesty aroma to fill your kitchen, replacing the previous wretched odours.
