New Match of the Day host Gabby Logan has been blasted on social media for a 'cringey' plea to Newcastle United ace Alexander Isak. The striker is being linked with a move away from Newcastle, with Isak having reportedly told the club's hierarchy that he wants out this summer.
Liverpool are believed to be leading the chase for Isak, who could command a British transfer fee if he leaves. Understandably, Newcastle fans have been panicked by the latest development, with Logan even going as far as begging the 25-year-old to stick around at St. James' Park.
Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, the presenter said: "The citadel of St James Park, that sits high and proud at the centre of the town, is like a cathedral of hope, of creativity, of joy. You know yourself: on match day, there probably isn't anywhere else in the world you'd rather play football.
"It's a city that has grown champions and heroes. From Jackie Milburn to Alan Shearer, you have walked in the footsteps of some giants. You know the love and adoration that comes from being Newcastle's number nine."
Her passionate plea concluded with a direct message for the Swede, saying: "Alexander, don't leave. Don't go anywhere else. You are already at home!"
It sparked a reaction on social media, with fans quick to question Logan's motive, with @Matt600000 saying: "This is so cringey. He's only been there for 3 seasons. It's not like he's homegrown or anything."
@Gaz_Bellamy, presumably sarcastic, added: "HAHAHA this is gold. I'm sure this rallying call will change his mind."
@Pinata_AM, unimpressed, said: "He already had 1 foot out the door, now he has 2. This is so cringe. How old are you, again?"
Whereas @dantheman1976 claimed: "Wow. What on earth is this? Embarrassing and cringeworthy."
Isak, who is under contract at Newcastle until 2027, will no doubt continue to attract interest throughout the summer. When quizzed on his talisman, manager Eddie Howe replied: "There's things going on behind the scenes. He will be aware he's in the news every day and I'm sure that's not easy for anyone.
"Conversations that happen between Alex and the club or Alex and myself will stay private. We do share a really good relationship with him. He's been magnificent for us since he's joined. He's very popular in the dressing room and we'd love him to continue his journey at Newcastle."
