Jamie Oliver has shared a pizza dough recipe that fans say is better than any takeaway. The celebrity chef says the method is so simple that anyone can do it, and it makes perfect pizza at home, every time. He wrote: "Once you've tried this easy pizza dough recipe, you'll never look back (trust me)."

Home cooks have been full of praise for the recipe, calling it "incredible" and "ten out of ten". One person wrote: "Wow, wow, wow, first attempt at this recipe and it's better than any takeaway pizza, big thumbs up from all the kids and me, nice one JO. Legend!"

The secret ingredient in Jamie's recipe is golden caster sugar, which is added to the yeast and water mixture to boost the flavour and help the dough rise better.

The recipe uses strong white bread flour or Tipo '00' flour, with the option of adding semolina for extra flavour.

Jamie says the Tipo '00' flour gives the dough a "super-smooth texture" that's ideal for pizza.

The method is easy to follow and the dough can be made in advance and kept in the fridge or freezer until needed.

Ingredients

  • 1kg strong white bread flour or Tipo '00' flour (or 800g bread flour and 200g semolina flour)
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 x 7g sachets of dried yeast
  • 1 tablespoon golden caster sugar
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 650ml lukewarm water

Method

  • Sieve flour and salt onto a clean surface and make a well in the middle.
  • Mix yeast, sugar and oil into the water, then pour into the well.
  • Use a fork to slowly bring in the flour, then knead with your hands until smooth.
  • Put dough in a floured bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave in a warm room for 1 hour.
  • Knead again to push out air. Use straight away or store in the fridge/freezer.
  • Divide into 6-8 balls and roll out 15-20 minutes before cooking.
  • Preheat oven to 250C/500F/gas 9. Add toppings.
  • Bake for 7-10 minutes on a tray or foil, or for around 4 minutes in a pizza oven.
