Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been left with devastating injuries following a car crash.
The "freak accident" occurred in New Hampshire on Saturday night, when his rental car was struck from behind, spokesman Michael Ragusa said.
The 81 year old politician was rushed to hospital with a broken vertebra and numerous cuts and bruises on his body. The news comes as drivers faced three-hour delays after horror multi-vehicle crash.
Giuliani's wounds were primarily to his left arm and lower leg, his spokesperson said.
Ragusa explained that Giuliani had exited his car after being flagged down by a woman who needed assistance, saying, "Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident.", reports the Mirror US.
"He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety," said Ragusa, who is Giuliani's head of security.
"The accident occurred after he re-entered his vehicle, which was then hit from behind at high speed.
"He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg," Ragusa added, reports the Express US.

Ragusa clarified that the crash was "not a targeted attack."
It remains unclear why Giuliani was in New Hampshire.
The father-of-two shot to prominence in the 1980s and 90s in New York City as a prosecutor, before being elected mayor, and serving two terms that spanned from 1994 to 2001.
Giuliani also ran for the presidency in 2008. In his later career, Giuliani became a close advisor to President Donald Trump and was instrumental in spreading conspiracy theories about ballot counters following Trump's loss in the 2020 election.
Subsequently, he was disbarred in New York and Washington, DC, and declared bankruptcy after being held liable for £146 million for disseminating false information about Georgia election workers.
