When most people think of summer holidays, they imagine sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches, bustling Spanish plazas, and the turquoise waters of the Balearics. But Christian Locke, Travel Expert at leading cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel, has a different go-to destination, one where August days are comfortably mild, wildlife roams freely, and the landscapes look like they've been lifted straight from a nature documentary.
That destination is South Africa. "This majestic destination has incredible scenery that must be seen with your own eyes," said Locke.
"Its natural landscape is stunningly diverse and adorned with fascinating wildlife. Every trip feels unique because the country offers deserts, forests, mountains, and coastlines, all within reach."
While much of Europe basks in sweltering heat, South Africa in August enjoys winter in the southern hemisphere, with average highs of around 18°C.
It's the dry season, ideal for safaris, as animals gather at watering holes, making them easier to spot. It's also prime whale-watching time, adding a splash of maritime magic to your travels.
Cape Town's Table Mountain offers jaw-dropping views of the city and surrounding coastline. Visitors can take a scenic cable car ride to the summit, or for the more adventurous, tackle one of the many hiking trails.
Just offshore lies Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a powerful and moving look into South Africa's history, including the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela.
South Africa is a tapestry of 11 official languages and countless cultural traditions.
Respectful greetings, often accompanied by a handshake and smile, are the norm. Elders are held in high regard, and titles like "Mama" or "Tata" are commonly used in rural areas.
For food lovers, a traditional braai, South Africa's beloved barbecue, is a must-try. It's a social event filled with sizzling meats, local sides, and good company.
Getting around is also simple, thanks to domestic flights, car rentals, and ride-hailing services like Uber. Guided tours are especially recommended for safaris and cultural experiences.
"From incredible scenery to traditional culture and cuisine, this captivating destination is perfect for those wanting to see the world through a different lens," Locke added.
"It's a place that stays with you long after you return home."
