There's no wonder that passengers of this epic train ride think it's so spectacular that it has been featured in National Geographic. As pretty as it is dramatic, the route spans 120 miles of unspoiled natural beauty - but unlike many famous rail routes, this one will only set you back £2.40 an hour.
The incredibly scenic trip takes you through rugged mountains, quaint market towns and past glorious castles. You'll enjoy waking up to the sounds of birds, boats, and misty hills, as well as dramatic weather, changing light, coastal sunrises and vibrant towns - all from the comfort of your train seat. You'll likely also spot a few dolphins, ospreys and porpoises along the way.
The train journey along the Welsh coastal path from Aberystwyth to Pwllheli has scored an impressive 90.38 out of 100 in a survey by Sweepstakes Table, which set out to find some of the top winter rail routes.
In just the space of a few hours, the Cambrian Coast Railway treats travellers to stunning views across Cardigan Bay and of Snowdonia's mountains.
And there's no reason not to hop off the train. If you do, you can take a stroll along the long sandy beaches or request a stop at Llwyngwril station to follow the Yarn Bombing Trail, where you'll spot colourful street art made up of crocheted displays.
Whether it's sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding or simply a gentle stroll through the independent shops, markets, and cafes, there's something for everyone at points on this route.
The Dyfi Estuary is particularly impressive at sunrise, and as the train grips along the cliffs at Y Friog, you won't want to look down. While Pwylhilli is the gateway to popular surfing spots, the beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne offer perfect sandcastle-making opportunities.
On TripAdvisor, one adventurer who travelled the train route said: "The journey is spectacular, coast to one side and mountains and grassland to the other."
Another said: "You couldn't ask for a more beautiful and charming trip along this gorgeous coast."
To get to the coast, from Shrewsbury, the Cambrian Main Line takes you over the border into Wales, eventually merging into the Cambrian Coast Line. Other UK winter rail trips scoring among the highest included the Cumbrian Coast Line, Furness Line, and the Esk Valley Railway.
