Ukraine has carried out an audacious mass drone attack and destroyed Russian nuclear-capable bombers deep inside territory in a humiliating day for the Kremlin. It's reported the operation was carried out by Ukraine's security service (SBU), and hit four Russian airfields today (June 1) in what could be the most damaging strike by Kyiv since the war began.
Confirming the attack, an SBU source said: "Enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia - this is the result of a special operation by the SBU."
It's reported footage showing Russian planes being attacked is from the Belaya base in Siberia and there are also said to have been attacks on Olenya air base in the Arctic. With drones also targeting the Ivanovo air base, northeast of Moscow, and Dyagilevo base, south of the capital.
Belaya base is an astonishing 3,400 miles from the front line in Ukraine, making the attack potentially even more surprising for the Russians. It's said at least 40 aircraft could have been destroyed.
At the same time as the airfield attacks, the Kremlin is said to have launched the biggest number of drones at Ukraine since the full-scale invasion three years ago, Ukraine's air force said on Sunday. The air force said 472 drones were launched over Ukraine. Russian forces also launched seven missiles alongside the barrage of drones, said Yuriy Ignat, head of communications for the Ukrainian air force.
