Lucknow: UP tourism and irrigation departments launched an initiative to transform dams and reservoirs into vibrant eco-tourism destinations. As part of the plan, infrastructure will be developed at seven key sites, including Gunta Dam in Chitrakoot, Arjun Dam in Mahoba, Dhandraul Dam in Sonbhadra, Maudha Dam in Hamirpur, Garhmau Lake in Jhansi, Majhouli Sagar in Siddharthnagar and Nawab Tank in Banda. The initiative includes promotion of water and adventure sports, in collaboration with department of irrigation and water resources.
Sharing details on Saturday, an official spokesperson said, "Main objective of the initiative is to transform these scenic water bodies into attractive destinations for tourists. Govt believes development of modern tourism facilities such as resorts, boating, water sports , trekking and camping will not only attract tourists but also boost local employment and economic growth."
Adding that irrigation and water resources department will provide technical support and necessary approvals for these projects, the spokesperson said, "The department will also ensure safety and structural integrity of the dams are not compromised and that environmental and safety standards for water-based activities are followed strictly."
The spokesperson also noted that the initiative would benefit local communities directly and indirectly and added, "The development of tourism will create employment opportunities in areas in the form of hotels, restaurants, transportation and guiding services. Moreover, it will further strengthen UP's status on the domestic and international tourism map."
