The St. Louis Blues punched their ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a dominating 6-1 victory over the Utah Hockey Club at Enterprise Centre. The Blues, requiring a regulation victory to clinch postseason membership, played a statement game that had supporters in their seats and the league taking notice. At the opening whistle, it was obvious: St. Louis wasn't going to allow this chance to get away.
St. Louis Blues take playoff position with dynamite first period against Utah Hockey Club
The St. Louis Blues didn't hesitate to prove they came to play. The Blues exploded for four goals all by themselves in the first period alone, effectively locking up their playoff spot before the intermission horn could even sound. It wasn't hockey; it was a high-octane performance art piece featuring a team that finally got its rhythm going at precisely the perfect time.
Jordan Kyrou scored two, and Pavel Buchnevich contributed a goal and two assists with a performance of finesse punctuated by ruthless determination. There was also a memorable night for Jimmy Snuggerud, who scored his first-ever NHL goal—a sweet moment made all the sweeter after video review upheld it stood. In the meantime, Brayden Schenn and Zack Bolduc both scored and assisted, as the Blues wrapped up the regular season on a spotless 12-game home winning streak.
“A lot goes into it,” Brayden Schenn said. “This is what you play for. This is what you train for in the summer, and this is what you play for all year to have a chance at the Stanley Cup. We just have to get in, and anything can happen. We saw that years ago. We’ve been on a good run her,e and at the same time, just can’t be happy that we’re in and playing Winnipeg. Winnipeg’s obviously a good team and is going to present a good challenge for us, but I don’t think anyone gave us a chance, really, at the end of the day, where we were. I’m glad we kept it together and too many good pieces in this locker room not to get in the playoffs, and we felt if we played hard for one another, we can get the job done. It just took 82 games.”
The playoffs will not be easier. St. Louis will face off against the Winnipeg Jets , who took the Presidents' Trophy and the top position in the Central Division. But as Brayden Schenn reminded everyone, this team has been questioned before—and quieted.
