NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy 's latest guided-missile destroyer , INS Surat, successfully test-fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile . The missile, jointly developed with Israel, has a 70-km interception range.
The missile was fired at a sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea.
INS Surat is the fourth Visakhapatnam-class stealth destroyer of the Indian Navy, commissioned in January 2025. Built with 75% indigenous content, it features AI integration, BrahMos and Barak-8 missiles, and advanced radar systems.
Named after the city in Gujarat, it showcases India’s naval self-reliance and rapid shipbuilding, enhancing multi-domain warfare capabilities significantly.
The test comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in Kashmir's Pahalgam.
Earlier, PM Narendra Modi issued a bitter warning to terrorists on Thursday, pledging to "identify, track, and punish" those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 28 lives.
Addressing his first public gathering since the attack, PM Modi expressed the nation's grief and assured decisive action against the perpetrators.
"On April 22, terrorists killed innocent people of the country in J&K's Pahalgam... The country is sad and in pain after this incident. We stand with the families of the victims. The terrorists will not be spared, strong action will be taken against them," PM Modi said.
"The punishment will be significant and stringent, which these terrorists would have never even thought about," he added. Further PM Modi said that India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism and every effort will be made to make sure that justice is done.
"Today, on the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism," Prime Minister said.
"Terrorism will not go unpunished. Every effort will be made to make sure that justice is done. The entire nation is one in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us. I thank the people of various countries and their leaders who have stood with us," he added.
