'Dreams, tears, and triumph': Families of India's World Cup heroes celebrate with pride and joy

As Harmanpreet Kaur-led India lifted the Women’s World Cup trophy, cricketers’ families across the country erupted in tears of joy and chants of pride. From Siliguri to Agra to Vadodara, families of the victorious players could barely hold back their emotions.

In Siliguri, Pappy Dalal, coach of Richa Ghosh , could hardly contain his happiness. “I feel very happy and proud. I had prayed for Richa's good performance, and she played extremely well in every match. My happiness knows no bounds today,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion.


In Gujarat's Vadodara, Milind Varwadekar, coach of Radha Yadav , was beaming with pride. “I was always saying that India would win because we always dominate South Africa. The team’s morale was really high after defeating Australia. Deepti Sharma always delivers a breakthrough. Today, Radha was in the team, and nothing made me happier than that because she is from my academy,” he said, his eyes glistening.

In Haryana, where Shafali Verma ’s blistering shots have inspired a generation, her parents were overwhelmed. “We are all happy. Haryana and the whole nation are celebrating,” said her mother. “We were hopeful from the beginning that our girls would win. We will give her a grand welcome.”

Her father, with folded hands, thanked the heavens. “It is all by the grace of God. The whole nation was praying for our victory. By His grace, she has become the Player of the Match. The whole team worked hard to ensure victory,” he said.

From Madhya Pradesh, joy poured out from Kranti Goud ’s family. Her sister Roshni shared, “We are very happy that India has won the World Cup for the first time. My sister Kranti was also part of the team, and she has played the World Cup for the first time. It was her dream to play for the Indian team, and she got to play in every match. We will give her a grand welcome when she returns home.”


In Agra, the streets were alive with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” as Deepti Sharma’s family celebrated her match-winning spell. Her father said proudly, “We are very happy and elated. The whole nation is celebrating. When Deepti comes home, she will receive a grand welcome from the whole of Agra. She performed really well today.”

Her mother’s voice quivered with emotion as she led the chants. “Deepti has performed very well. She has stood up to our expectations. She has made the country proud. I want to congratulate the whole team and the country. She has fulfilled the dream of the entire nation,” she said, as tears of pride rolled down her cheeks.
